Birds and
Wildlife

If you enjoy seeing wildlife up close and personal, a stay in our luxury accommodation will provide you with ample opportunity to do so. With its range of diverse habitats, shelter sites, food and water sources, Lilypad is a haven for many different animals but most notably, bird life. More than 130 bird species have been recorded on the property, which we are very proud of as it is considered a high biodiversity in the context of Australia.

Spend some time walking down near the ponds and you may spot numerous duck and heron species, spoonbills, a variety of different kingfishers, bitterns and the occasional sea eagle. Late in the afternoon, the Black Cockatoos appear en mass, cackling and cavorting like clowns. When the rainforest trees are in fruit, brightly coloured Wompoo and Rose-crowned Fruit Doves arrive to feast. There are Catbirds, Pardalotes, Wrens, all manner of Honeyeaters, and of course in late Winter, Spring and early Summer, Bellingen’s famous Regent Bowerbirds put on their best show. They can often be seen from the cabin balconies, just keep an eye out for the brilliant flash of yellow and black and use the binoculars provided in the cabins to enjoy a closer look.

Can’t be bothered leaving the cabin? Don’t worry, you can still be guaranteed to see an Eastern Spinebill buzz past you in its hurry to plunder nectar, be serenaded by a Superb Blue Fairy Wren with its beautiful song, and see the flash of red from a Scarlet Honeyeater as he feasts on the bottlebrush next to your window.

And it’s not just birds you’ll see, in the early hours of the morning Swamp and Agile Wallabies can sometimes be seen grazing the lawns, in the evenings bandicoots nose around in the mulch for grubs, water dragons sun themselves listlessly by the ponds, and the occasional Echidna plods harmlessly by. With all the water on the property Lilypad also provides homes for more than 12 species of frog including the Giant Barred Frog, a threatened species in NSW. In the warmer months, sit out on the balcony at sunset sipping wine and wait for the symphony to start.

Lilypad’s cabins provide a truly unique stay, allowing you to experience birds and wildlife up close, whilst in the comfort of luxury accommodation.
